First of all, we are excited to share that refill buying is not only good for the planet but much better for your wallet as well. When you bring your own container to refill you are only paying for the amount of ounces of the product. This means you are not paying for the following:

  • added water in the case of a dehydrated powder instead of liquid soap

  • to transport the product with or without water

  • for the packaging to house the product

All that you have to do to take advantage of the price & planet savings is to incorporate a refill run into your errands from time to time. At hygge | HABIT we prefer to do this once a quarter or less by bringing our biggest containers and lots of them to stock up on all the essentials at one time. We are located in Fort Collins so we add a bulk refill trip on to another reason that we are Denver to ensure that our carbon footprint is even lower by not going out of our way just for this trip.

If and when we order online (which is rare but sometimes necessary) we try to order more than one item “to fill the box” so to speak. This is a way to justify the carbon emissions necessary to ship straight to us. This sometimes requires patience as we wait until we need more than just the one thing to order. Or getting creative as we try to find something else that could work in the missing item’s place.

The Struggle that is "Going" Zero Waste

That is just it, we are “going”… and quite frankly I don’t think we will ever truly “get” there! Don’t get me wrong, I am an internal optimist but I am also a realist and I don’t like to set myself up for failure. And to be honest, sometimes life just happens, shit happens and well, you miss the mark. For example, my partner and I have been “going” zero waste for a few years now and we are so far from a mason jar of trash per year but we have made some huge steps for our lifestyle. How to go from Bulk Buying Food to Refill Buying for even greater benefits

Buying in bulk is thought to be inherently sustainable because you are using one packaging element to hold more- this is kind of true. It is also supposed to be cheaper, which is definitely true because you aren’t paying for packaging. But really the only way to bulk buy with a zero waste approach is to bring something you already own to refill instead of using the containers provided by the store. Filling up a plastic bag with slightly more quantity is no different than buying oatmeal in already packaged plastic.
